As I was doing my morning reading today, these words from Norman Vincent Peale caught my eyes.
What really releases a person’s full potential? It’s the faith that you have in yourself, in other words confidence. Even the most skillful or talented person can become stuck or hidden if they don’t have faith in themselves all the while they could have made a bigger impact in the community that they were in.
So much of potential goes untapped not because there is lack of talent or opportunity but because there is lack of faith in one’s self. Faith in yourself is not arrogance but rather a knowing that you have about yourself that you can handle it and that you can do it !
1.Know Yourself
One of the things that you can do to have faith in yourself is to know yourself really well. Spend time understanding and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. There are many different personal self assessment quiz that is available, which can help you to understand yourself better.
As you know yourself, take strategic steps to leverage on your strengths, and improve on your weaknesses so that you can tap into your potential. Knowledge is only power when you apply it, otherwise it just becomes information that you may forget over time.
The truth is, when you have faith in yourself, the world becomes a different place for you.
1. You will be able to express yourself more fully
2. You take action instead of waiting
3. You step forward when others take a step back
Leaders need to have faith in themselves before they are able to inspire and lead others. If the team realizes that the leader doesn't have much confidence in himself then there will be no influence over them.
2. Change Your Self-Talk
Did you know that in a day we have about 60,000–80,000 thoughts about ourself or in other words what we say to ourselves. According to the article 80% of them are negative while 95% of them are repetitive. Changing your self-talk matters.
I remember a time in my life, where I really wanted to change myself talk and what I did was that I use to have a rubber band on my left hand. Whenever I had a negative thought or said something negative about myself, I use to pull the rubber band and let it go.
The pain was light but the action reminded me something important that I should be careful about what I say to myself because ultimately what I say to myself impacts me. Also not forgetting what you say to yourself becomes an instruction to your mind as your subconscious mind is also listening.
Every word that you say to yourself is programming yourself for victory or defeat. Speak words that are empowering you such as “I am capable, I can do it, I am strong” compared to “I am dumb, I am not good enough, I can’t do it”.
3. Growth Zone
Move from your comfort zone to really tap into your potential because the chances are that if you stay in your comfort zone, you are not growing. Growth is really important, by growth means facing situations that you never faced before.
When you face new situations and new challenges it is more likely to help you to tap into the potential reservoir that you have on the inside of you. Until and unless you are challenged, you are not going to tap into this and that is why you need to move from your comfort zone.
Sometimes it could mean that saying yes to a new responsibility in your workplace. Other times it could be time to change your career or even more so to change your location as well. All these challenges you to rise higher then where you were before in terms of your skills and experience.
Everyday, you have to be intentional about it. Don’t let fear keep you from really living your potential because you will be amazed at your capabilities once you tap into your potential reservoir. Make a plan to grow and be consistent with your plan !
Finally, you are capable of doing extraordinary things in your life and only you know what you are fully capable of. The purpose of this article was to inspire you to reach for the stars! Start today, dont let fear or limiting beliefs stop you from realizing the potential that you have in your life.
