Having Goals In Life

Checklist with a target and clock, colored orange. Text: Goals aren’t reached by leaps, but by the quiet persistence of daily steps. Website: www.jobthecoach.com.

I was reading the book titled Magic of Thinking Big by Dr David J Schwartz, and I was on to the chapter titled “Use Goals To Help You Grow”. He explains on how we need to have goals in our life that is meaningful to us and by having them it actually helps you to grow in life.

The purpose of this writing is to help you realize how important it is to have goals and to be persistent with taking action towards those goals. Without goals life can become mundane and stagnant and we need goals to help us unlock the potential that we have on the inside.

Why goals are important in life ?

To often without goals, we might also travel through life aimlessly and not achieve anything significant. In order to become someone who truly lived up to their potential and to achieve something significant in life we need to set goals so that:

  1. We learn the necessary skills and develop ourselves

  2. To use the present resources more strategically.

  3. We learn to associate with people who can actually help us realize the goals

  4. We learn to make better decisions in life

  5. We learn to prioritize which is important.

I have trained participants on goal setting and helped them to develop goals that are meaningful in their life. What matters is that how persistent we are in realizing the goals to become a reality in our life. If we don’t take any action towards them, then they will just remain to be goals.

A question that helps you to develop goals in life

One of the questions the author asks readers in helping them to develop goals is that “where do you see yourself in 10 years time?” In fact, it is a very important question! No one wants to be at the same level in life, in fact everyone desires to be more and want more out of life.

A few years ago, I realized that I wanted to be more and get more out of life and that’s when I learned to develop goals for myself. The goals helped me to move from my comfort zone and gave me the opportunity to learn new skills and gain more experience. The goals helped me to serve a wider group of people.

If at present you are not happy where you are and want more out of life, maybe more income, more family time, better health, career progression, then you need to have strategic goals that will help you to realize the desire that you have in your life.

Secondly, he reminds the readers that our work is the one that has the most influence upon our life because it is associated with income and recognition. Therefore we need to be wise with choosing the right profession because that’s where we will be spending majority of our time.

How to be persistent with your goals

Once you have goals you need be persistent in terms of taking action towards them. Sure, everyone has goals but what matters is if we don’t take action towards them then they will just remain to be goals. In my motivation book I talk about how goals help us to be motivated in life.

Always write those goals down because it is said that when you write them down, there are more chances in terms of the goal actualy becoming a reality. Secondly look at them often, I learned quite long ago that if I wanted to achieve a particular goal, I need to consistently look at it throughout the day.

In fact some of the goals that I wrote down did become true for me because I consistently looked at them daily. The principle behind this is simple because we are capable of forgetting the goals that we set. Therefore it is important to remind yourself of your direction in life or where you want to be in the next 10 years by looking at the goals.

Secondly constantly evaluate how are you progressing towards the goals that you have set whether you need to make any changes in terms of learning something new, experimenting or how to allocate more time and so on. The important thing is, the more you evaluate yourself, the more you empower yourself because you will know what is working and what is not working.

It is important to change the things that are not working and focus more on the things that are working. End of the day what counts is, are you moving forward towards your goal or are you just being busy in life. Being busy doesn't necessarily mean that you are getting closer to your goal unless you are occupied with the right things.

Conclusion

Have goals in life because they will help you to grow and to have the right direction in life. Secondly look at the goals daily because they will remind you of what you need to do and how to use your present resources more strategically and finally to evaluate how you are doing and to put more focus on the things that are actually helping you move closer towards your goal.
